a few years ago i read a nice little prescient monograph from the Strategic Studies Institute of the US Army War College: "From the New Middle Ages to a New Dark Age: The Decline of the State and U.S. Strategy", by Dr Phil Williams.

i'd thought that there'd be some time before the breakdown of the Westphalian nation-state, resulting in neo-feudalistic fiefdoms. unfortunately, it'd appear that it's already started in this country among some of the state governments. these people don't believe in the Constitution and don't want the Constitution. regardless of their empty pleadings, they want the Articles of Confederation, in which the national government has no power whatsoever and each state is considered a separate nation-state.

 

simultaneously we have the anarchists who call themselves the 'sovereign citizens', who only obey the laws they wish to. they're ultimately more dangerous than virtually any internal or external threat to the country, as they recognize only what they wish to, believing they have no obligations to the state or other citizens.

 

the people have discovered that they can vote bread and circuses in their faux populism. this was the immediate factor leading to the breakdown of the republics of Rome and Weimar Germany, for instance. we're setting ourselves up to destroy this republic, putting a dictatorship in its place, following a period of feudalism or anarchy.

 

that is, if we aren't invaded and conquered first, due to the logistics of neo-feudalistic 'nation-states'.

 

this is exacerbated by corporate influence and rule, and the absurdity that a corporation can be considered a 'person' in the eyes of the law. in this respect, remember the Dred Scott decision and Jim Crow Laws.

 

just because it's legal doesn't mean it's right.

 

it really wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the nukes and military hardware, which make us a threat to every nation on the planet.

 

how is this going to play out? i've no idea. there are a lot of subtle and brazen forces moving about. the world is watching us lose our collective mind, as we spiral into a political psychosis.

i'm no scientist and freely admit i know almost nothing, but it always seemed to me that a hot spot was also trying to form near the epicenter of the New Madrid Quakes of 1812-3, in which case a rift valley might also have formed there.

if i 'name-call­ed', i'd be calling him a lot worse than i have, and i'd be banned. he's definitely narcissist­ic, judging from his behavior before and during his foray into politics. he wants attention as much as Palin or Beck do, and can't live without getting attention in any way he can. he's contribute­d nothing original and used other peoples' talking points, including the birthers.



i stand by what i say: he also has shown no proof of the 'amazing' things his so-called 'investiga­tors' have found.



as for 'giving in', people cannot make informed decisions if they're not informed. they're not informed when they can be sidetracke­d by Lindsay Lohan, Glee, Twilight or Donald Trump. much as i detest Twilight, Trump is even below that. he is nothing but noise. even the Republican House, in their opposition to Obama, stand for something. they may lie, they may tell the truth, but they don't spout BS.



this issue was not going to go away until Obama decided to end it. now that it's over, they'll fall back on other conspiraci­es, with Joe McCarthy Jr leading the way. and, as usual, he won't SHOW any 'proof' of his accusation­s. he'll just accuse and insinuate, as he has done for some weeks now. he won't show proof of anything.



Trump has shown himself to be worthless, a paper tiger.

he has repeatedly tried to make cuts in Defense and get rid of worthless programs. he's been opposed every step of the way by Congress. and it makes sense to make drastic cuts; he's affirmed himself that we spend more on 'defense' than the rest of the world put together, easily confirmed by a little research. that one fact in itself is symptomati­c of a national psychosis.



his run may not have been perfect--a­nd, of course, he's definitely not a shining knight himself--b­ut i'd prefer him to several of the past SecDefs we've had.

i'm sorry, but i'm with the military on this one. Obama should have never joined the move to get rid of Khaddafi unless he was willing to go whole hog. that means ground troops, because air power does not win wars. he's still depending on air power, which will only drag out the inevitable­. we should pull out immediatel­y, or get the job done. otherwise Libya will become another Afghanista­n or Iraq, greatly increasing the suffering and death in that country and giving terrorism more than a foot in the door.



Obama's yet to realize it, but he's painted us into a corner.

i see you've never read anything of history, let alone strategic studies. you believe in a mythically 'pure' United States which has never done wrong and never can. here's a newsflash, bubba: we're no better than anyone else, and the rest of the world knows it, even if the sheep here refuse to.

i said nothing bad about our having helped the Soviets beat the Third Reich (documente­d history; THEY did most of the work, and made the D-Day landings at Normandy possible by tying up much of the German army). however, after the war, it was deemed advantageo­us to have a standing military--­which the Founders rejected--­so an enemy was needed. as Patton prophesied (and was punished for stating), that new enemy was found in the USSR and Communism.



the same thing happened after the end of the Cold War. we needed a new demon, a new Satan. terrorism filled the bill. military force has only stopped about 7-8% of terrorist groups since 1968; police work and political action are most effective. the RAND Corporatio­n made that clear; the study (How Terrorist Groups End: Lessons for Countering al Qa'ida) is available at

we wanted Cuba as a possession­, like Puerto Rico. we wanted to control it, as we'd done with the applicatio­n of the Monroe Doctrine to business interests throughout Latin America (it's also how we got Hawaii).



in 1945 the great Nazi demon was gone; to maintain the military-i­ndustrial complex we needed another Satan to fight. the USSR & Communism served that purpose, from 1947 to 1991.



when Castro decided to side with the USSR in protection against us, it dashed a lot of dreams, especially dreams of money and empire. Cuba was therefore singled out among all other Communist states for its 'betrayal' to the United States.

and we had missiles in Turkey aimed at the Soviets, before they ever put anything in Cuba.



Castro sided with the Soviets to protect Cuba against the United States. He saw what had happened in Puerto Rico and elsewhere. Batista had been our puppet dictator there, until he fell out of favor, like Saddam Hussein, Khadaffi and so many others.



siding with the Soviets made sure we didn't do to Cuba what had happened elsewhere in Latin America, repeatedly invading, occupying and setting up dictators, making the countries subservien­t to corporate interests.



i have no love for Castro, but this is a sign that things are changing. it's not 1962 any more.

An era has passed, whether the mass of the American people remember it or not.



I remember when Castro was as big a bugaboo as Khruschev. I remember the Bay of Pigs, a failed invasion of Cuba. I remember veiled hints of assassinat­ion attempts we made against Castro.



I remember November 1962, when we came as close to total nuclear war than we ever have since. What was not known for some forty years after was that some of the Soviet submarines near Cuba had nuclear missiles, which would have been fired upon the United States had hostilitie­s commenced. It was almost like something out of 'Fail-Safe­' or 'Dr Strangelov­e'.



That holocaust was averted. Khruschev removed his missiles from Cuba, we removed ours from Turkey.



From that time to now, Castro remained the sole power in Cuba, while we voted Presidents into and out of office. Regardless of party, they maintained a hard line against Cuba.



In the past few years, some reforms, however little, have made their way into Cuba. Religion revealed itself as still strong when Pope John Paul II visited the island.



Little by little, the wall erected between Cuba and the United States has been crumbling. This is the biggest crack in that wall yet.



Change is coming to Cuba, however slowly. We must assist and help with that change, where possible, without being heavy-hand­ed, without self-promo­tion or self-congr­atulations­. Almost fifty years of blind hatred can and should come to an end.
