i see you've never read anything of history, let alone strategic studies. you believe in a mythically 'pure' United States which has never done wrong and never can. here's a newsflash, bubba: we're no better than anyone else, and the rest of the world knows it, even if the sheep here refuse to.

i said nothing bad about our having helped the Soviets beat the Third Reich (documente­d history; THEY did most of the work, and made the D-Day landings at Normandy possible by tying up much of the German army). however, after the war, it was deemed advantageo­us to have a standing military--­which the Founders rejected--­so an enemy was needed. as Patton prophesied (and was punished for stating), that new enemy was found in the USSR and Communism.



the same thing happened after the end of the Cold War. we needed a new demon, a new Satan. terrorism filled the bill. military force has only stopped about 7-8% of terrorist groups since 1968; police work and political action are most effective. the RAND Corporatio­n made that clear; the study (How Terrorist Groups End: Lessons for Countering al Qa'ida) is available at
