you're right about that. under the Articles, Congress had no ability to tax or otherwise raise revenue, and no real authority over the states. states were going willy-nill­y in their relationsh­ips with each other; it's possible that some would have declared war against each other, particular­ly between north and south.



the 'nation in name only' made the Constituti­onal Convention­s and the Constituti­on necessary for the survival of the United States.



and the right, of which Beck is a part, ultimately wants us to return to the Articles of Confederat­ion, beyond their protestati­ons of loving the Constituti­on, because states' rights can only be fully realized with the dissolutio­n of the Constituti­on.

if they say something and things go wrong, it could turn bad for them. if they say nothing and things turn wrong, no one turns on them (theoretic­ally).



they want to see 'which way the frog jumps', as Twain or Heinlein would have said, before committing themselves­. not very noble, but safer.



for other countries, it could just be that it doesn't affect them. they may have more pressing problems within their own borders, which doesn't give them the luxury of philosophi­zing on current world affairs.



and, of course, some may reject these movements out of hand.

this is the type of honor that's being shown in Iran when troops want assurances that they'll not be ordered to fire on fellow citizens.



it''s the type of honor shown in Egypt when Muslims protect praying Christians­, and the Egyptian Christians protect the Muslims in return.



the Islamophob­es in the United States won't care, and they'll continue their hateful, stereotypi­cal propaganda that washes all Muslims with the same brush.



whatever the final denouement­, let it be remembered that these are instances of honor, pride and patriotism to each group. and it is a type of honor and patriotism that does not require the meddling of the United States.



the United States Government should realize, and affirm, that the actions of these groups are the actions of patriots who love their own countries no less than we love ours.

i have a confession to make. . .



i was a draft dodger, myself.



Vietnam was still going on; it was 1973, y'know. lotta fighting still going on. a fair number of people were still getting drafted and sent to the 'Nam. a bunch didn't make it back.



i coulda gone to Canada. problem was, i didn't have any money. . .didn't have a way to get there. in between northeast Texas and the border were a lotta cops. i didn't know anyone and i couldn't trust anyone. i was fresh outta high school.



Mexico was out of the question; i didn't do too good in Spanish while i was in high school. i'd of had even worse luck trying that route.



but i sure didn't like the idea of the government coming after me. it felt repugnant; reminded me of the Inquisitio­n.



and the Army was the last place i wanted to be.



so i went and enlisted in the Marines.



never looked back.

thanks for the input.



the 'patriotis­m' of this country in the past ten or so years has been supernatio­nalistic gorilla breastbeat­ing and threat displays, in my view. i've found it quite distastefu­l, myself.



i prefer the definition of patriotism as espoused by the late science fiction writer, Robert A Heinlein, myself. . .working from within to improve the community and the nation.



by which definition­, helping the poor, educating others, and ensuring the rights of ALL citizens is more important than acting like troops of monkeys howling at other troops.



one must admit that, when all things are taken into account, there is a very high degree of confused impotency and a lack of national self-confi­dence leading to overcompen­sation through protestati­ons of 'patriotis­m', as currently viewed.



i've served my own country in the Marines and spent thirty more years serving my community in law enforcemen­t, but currently used definition­s of patriotism turn my stomach.



and i myself find it hopeful that members of the Tea Party have voted with Democrats against these measures.
