the fact of the matter is that none of the wars we're in should be considered that way. the past forty years or so have proved that direct military action is effective in ending only about 7% or so of terrorist groups. the vast majority (some 40% for each) ended through political action, or a combinatio­n of Intelligen­ce and local police work. which is why the local police are targets.

all 'normal' military force does is recruit more enemies of the United States, proving that bin Laden had actually won back in 2001. he stated then that his purposes were (1) to ruin us economical­ly and (2) to create the perception of a holy war. he's won on both counts, since the US government fell for it and is unable to extricate itself from those 'wars'. fighting individual­s isn't the same as fighting the forces of nation-sta­tes, and every innocent we kill enrages them more. we should never have continued after Tora Bora; nine years later does little, as he had basically been powerless since. on the other hand, we've betrayed ourselves and our ideals through fear and hatred, including hatred of all Muslims.
