Does Porn Watching Lead to Divorce?

a lot of it goes back to our religious roots. the country was based on Calvinistic-Lutheran Protestantism, which considered sex a sin and only for producing babies. (it should be remembered that Calvin's thought police even invaded the bedrooms of believers to make sure they were behaving in an approved manner.) people were taught to be ashamed of their bodies, and their sexuality. this was worst in the case of the women, who was to be kept 'in her place' (the kitchen and bedroom), a concept that largely held till the 20th century and especially the period of the 50s to the 70s.

society now's a mixture of the two. some women own themselves and their sexuality, and some men agree to it. others don't and don't wish it for others, and other men are frightened by it. media--whether formulaic porn or romantic comedies--present conflicting and unrealistic expectations for men and women. it can even be traced earlier, as in Disney movies, getting to kids when they're most impressionable.

but 'porn' itself's been with us since the beginning, worldwide. temples throughout southeast Asia have carved depictions of every type of sexual encounter. the friezes of Pompeii include murals of what we'd call 'porn', as do much of surviving Graeco-Roman statuary, pottery, etc.

the problem isn't so much porn, it's our society's attitudes towards it. . .although i will admit it doesn't have the quality of the 70s and 80s.
