global warming is reducing the amount of fresh water worldwide, and it's being felt deeply in India and Pakistan. they've come close to war over it. and they're both nuclear armed states. the US is supposedly an ally of both countries. this gives us the opportunity to defuse any aggressions before they lead to war.
our presence in Afghanistan also gives us unparalleled opportunites for espionage against China and Russia. the Chinese PLA (People's Liberation Army) has been modernizing at a fantastic rate, although it is still no match for us. on the other hand, they are years--maybe more--ahead of us at cyberwarfare.
the US and NATO announced last year that perceived cyberattacks might be met with conventional force, which implies they don't have the cybersavvy necessary to deal with them.
it's believed that many of the cyberattacks on the government or military of this country originate in either China or Russia.
Afghanistan makes a fairly good staging platform for espionage into either Russia or China.
other resources--oil, natural gas, etc--exist in the nations of Central Asia. both Russia and China are interested in them, as well as us.
the United States is by far the greatest consumer of energy, and our needs--as well as those of the world--are increasing with the population.
. . .'course, this is just my opinion; ah don' know nothin'. . .

the so-called 'revelation' of the discovery of precious metals, etc in Afghanistan is a basic political lever, in the sense that it's a further rationalization for our being there. . .we "have to help" the Afghans develop this wealth. . .
but it had been known to be there since, at least, the Soviet invasion decades earlier.
our supposed purpose for going to Afghanistan was to hunt down bin Laden and al Qaeda, and remove the Taliban as a source of power. bin Laden was allowed to escape, al Qaeda was allowed to scatter across the world and form or inspire splinter groups, and the Taliban was allowed to regroup and regain the strength and power it had lost.
so, like all the lies the American people believed about Iraq, we have now, basically, in Afghanistan.
yet there are other reasons, less obvious and less visible.
one is the continuing fear/rivalry of the nations in the region. for instance, Afghanistan is afraid of Pakistan. Pakistan is afraid of India. India is afraid of China. China is afraid of Russia.
similar fears exist, in differing amounts, among the Central Asian nations recently formed from the breakup of the former Soviet Union.
Pakistan and Bangladesh (former East Pakistan) were parts of India prior to 1947. since then Pakistan and India have been involved in several wars and smaller conflicts, as well as suffering from terrorist groups supported by their opposite numbers.

all you guys are partly correct, in that oil is the number one reason.
i had suspicions about the convenient 'discovery' of oil in Afghanistan around the time Obama took office. Just prior to 911, Congress had been about to subpoena Cheney for his secret energy meetings with big oil, which makes me suspect they knew about it then.
after all, the bordering Pakistani province of Baluchistan has a very great amount of oil; there had been plans to lay a pipeline across the province. the people there almost went into full rebellion against the Pakistani government, because they felt they weren't getting a fair share of the profits.

we all need to remember that, upon our initial invasion of Iraq in 2003, troops were ordered to guard refineries and pipelines.

not the museums and archaeological sites, documenting 7000 years of history, in the area where civilization first rose.

i belong to no herd. herd behavior was what let bin Laden get away, what caused the invasion of Iraq, what's made Afghanistan a mess, and how our government reacted exactly as bin Laden wanted them to. herd behavior is how the Constitution and international law have been trampled on since 911. herd behavior allows an opening for the demagogues and holy rollers to come in and take over and victimize and prey upon the sheep.
it may be offensive, but i'd rather speak as i see it, whether it's a fact, or only my opinion. sugarcoating only makes it worse.
this country is imploding under theocrats and teabaggers and mouthpieces who should be incarcerated for attempting to incite racism and violence against fellow Americans and anyone they don't like. Christianity has become an hypocritical and idolatrous religion under these selfsame people and their followers.
if the WTC site was so 'holy', you tell me why no one has built any memorial there? it's comin' up on nine years now. if i remember right, the Empire State Building went up in only three or so years.
seen lotsa plans for a memorial over the years. . .but not a single brick.
must be the same weaknesss that's kept us from the moon since 1972.

basically, it's a taste of the 'forbidden fruit'. . .taking on roles that are frowned on by society, and exerting control of the male libido by showing off their own sexuality. it's somewhat unlike situations they'll encounter in 'real' life (HAW!), and resembles 'getting away with something' in plain view of everyone.
a role like this strips away society's inhibitions. it's all the more exciting because it's frowned on, yet they're getting away with performing these roles, as if they were really strippers or prostitutes.
bit of a fantasy fulfillment in some cases, too, i'd suspect.
this is still an overwhelmingly male-oriented and male-dominated society. a role like this allows an actress to symbolically 'get back', you might say, by using another aspect of herself as a means of expression. unlike gratuitous nudity and sex scenes in some movies, roles like these are the entire reason for those movies; they're 'acceptable' because the role itself is the focus and not an accessory.

as i recollect--and i could be wrong--Bush presided over the greatest expanision of government since WW II, especially in his creation of DHS.
Obama's been forced to work with what the last Administration left him, just as they started with stuff left from Clinton, and so on. . .
things are so much worse on Obama's watch because he's having to clean up all the clusterf&*#s Cheney, Rumsfield, etc, created at the same time.
easy to open a can of worms; hard to get them back in. Bush Admin opened up the can, Obama Admin's trying to put them back.
. . .and if you read what i've written, nowehere have i said i endorsed anything specific he's done. just trying to say he's trying to clean up the mess.

one of my own fears is that some Tancredo-like personality now in Congress might take it on themselves to attempt something against Obama. i grew up in a fairly prejudiced part of the country, and i remember that when i first heard he'd been elected, my first thought was that they'd have to increase his protection by a factor of five.
looking at what's crawled out of the darkness since then, i was too lenient. Obama should increase his protection by a factor of ten. yet even that might not stop an aberrant, racist Congressman or Senator.

Jan Brewer's 'Beheaded' Bodies Claim Disputed By Local Law Enforcement Agencies
i love the idea of women in politics, and i agree that, overall, they can be much more sensible and practical than men.
that said, i cannot help but feel myself offended by the likes of Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann and Jan Brewer, because of their views. Governor Brewer's taking her cues from white nationalists--it appears to me that she is one--and she is doing her best to 'whiten' the state, since her new law is a form of legalized racism, regardless of what it says.
that she is now only compounding her errors with fantasies and conspiracy theories only highlights the dissonance Arizona has with reality. this latest story is reminiscent of the lies told by Cheney and Rumsfield and Bush, and believed by the mass of American people for some time.

i do not know, but certainly wouldn't doubt, that there may exist some extremist white types like this. there are, after all, quite a number of hate groups in the country, of differing races, religions and ideologies, several of which fit the designation 'terrorist'. the Ku Klux Klan, for instance, was the predominant terrorist group in this country until recently; it would appear that it might be on the decline at present.
