this is what happens when right-wing paranoia and fear take hold of a government.
imagine if this had happened in October 1962, when Kennedy and Khruschev were in power.
there would have been no November 1962.

i read a similar article to that of the WSJ a week or so ago. . .it was in the Atlantic. . .it stated that Washington's wealth, adjusted to present standards, would hover around 525 million dollars.
apparently the Kennedys never received an inheritance--JFK didn't--but the Kennedy kids all drew from a trust fund. The Kennedy estate was itself valued at around a billion dollars.
here's the link to the article:

Colin Powell: Oil Spill Is 'Beyond The Capacity' Of BP To Solve, Military Might Have Role
Republicans don't trust him, though he is--or has been--one.
During the 1st Bush Administration, Cheney and Rumsfield ganged up against him any time he tried to inject reason into a discussion. This was noted by some people at Defense; one of my monographs from the SSI alludes to it, though the language is nicer.
They more or less made his job as Secretary of State meaningless, since they wanted Iraq and everything that came with it. (Remember 'The Project For The New American Century'.) Powell basically--maybe not totally, but basically--got suckered into buying their line against Iraq and the need to invade. No big surprise that he didn't continue after Bush's reelection, since he would have remained an impotent figurehead, with Cheney and Rumsfield bending Bush's ear, as it were, and calling the shots.
With the worsening of conditions and further injection of partisan ideology into everything, talking heads like Limbaugh, etc., have repeatedly claimed that Powell's not a 'real' Republican. The hardnosers and hardliners in the GOP won't accept him.
Yet, if he'd chosen, he could've run for President and won.

Sarah Palin Erects Border Fence Around Her House (PHOTO)
This could provide endless possibilities for fun.
(1) sit on a chair facing the Palin house all day long, with a pen and a pad, and a pitcher of tea. watch and watch and watch. say nothing. every now and then, jot something down. watch some more. drink some tea. say nothing. jot something else down. wave if anyone directly looks at you, then jot down something else. drink more tea. say nothing.
repeat as necessary.
(2) set up arrays of cameras and microphones, bunched together at strategic areas, pointed directly at the Palin house. every now and then, come outside to fiddle with them, and change the tapes from the cameras (if any).
the beauty of this one is that you don't even need to have them connected, or have tapes in the cameras. the mere presence is annoyance enough.
(3) go over and ask to borrow a cup of sugar.
(4) go over and ask if a package in a 'plain brown wrapper' might have been delivered to their house by mistake.
(5) notes for chapter I of "My Neighbor, Sarah Palin"
"May 27th, 2010. Finally moved in. Glad that's done. Beautiful neighborhood; lovely scenery. Wonderful. And I can see Russia from my house. Perfectly satisfactory Everything's set up and I'm ready to go; the book should come easily. But there's only one thing that bothers me. . .
. . .why no housewarming party?"

stalking is a matter of following people, or appearing wherever they are, with an intent to create intimidation, and/or fear and apprehension.
if you go to the trouble to buy a house and move in, that's not stalking. it's called residence. if it is stalking, it's one big hell of an investment in intimidation.
Sarah Palin made herself a public figure. she shamelessly paraded her family, and their 'family values', before the American people at every possible chance. she's been doing this for years, now.
she has no more right to privacy than anyone else--less, as a public figure--and to deny McGinniss the purchase and/or occupation of a vacant house on the market is discriminatory and pre-prejudicial.
i doubt there'd have been a 'problem' if the new occupant had been someone from FOX News.
media reports on either the left or the right are, at times, prejudicial. This move is a unique opportunity for an independent, first-hand account of what has been reported as an 'all-American' family.
after all, it's not as if he's gonna crawl in through the kitchen window. people should get a grip.

and the locking up of sick people accelerated under Ronald Reagan, who cut off funding for mental health and contributed to the closing of many mental institutions.
the mentally ill, at times homeless, found themselves running afoul of the law and a good many were placed into prison. some became death row inmates as a result of the combination of their psychological state and outside circumstances, which lead to committing capital crimes.
with George W Bush as governor, it became a state pasttime in Texas to execute the mentally ill, something that had appeared to have stopped (or at least slowed down) at the beginning of the 20th century.

i'd suspect it happens lots more than you think.
it's merely what's considered good enough to be 'newsworthy'. and yes, of course preexisting health problems can accelerate it.
but i've been familiar with a few cases over the years; none of them were 'celebrities'. of course, they wouldn't make the cut into 'history'.
there is such a thing as 'true love'. but it's damned rare, and it's damned special, and outsiders know virtually nothing about the intensity and depth of the feelings involved.

Anti-Government Man Jerry Kane Jr., Teenage Son Reportedly Killed Police In Deadly Shootout
i've been staying with my daughter about 20 miles from home, because of some major surgery. a couple months ago or so, a dude got involved in a shootout here in her town after being pulled over.
he fled towards my home(town) and they followed. police at home put up a roadblock and he went through it. . .dude continued to the Wal-Mart, ran inside and started shooting.
an off-duty deputy sheriff from the next county was already inside; he shot & and killed him.
with these guys getting skragged at Wal-Mart, i'm beginning to wonder if it's some kind of trend.
certainly symbolic of 'market forces'.

The War Is Making You Poor Act
Basically, that's how it always was.
Read T H White's 'The Once And Future King', and you learn how the nobility sent the poor off to fight and die while the knights (upper class) partied. However, warfare is somewhat ancillary to the thrust of the tetrology; it's one of many phenomena explored therein.
The fifth installment, 'The Book Of Merlyn', was never added to 'The Once And Furture King', as was intended; editors saw to that. The whole book is an explanation of the why and wherefore of warfare, in terms of what was known at the beginning of WW II.
It would seem that things haven't changed at all, rather than the names and justifications. . .

Dennis Blair RESIGNING: Director Of National Intelligence To Be Replaced By Obama
I'd suggest you do some research. A good place to start would be the Strategic Studies Institute of the US Army War College.
I can refer you to several papers, including one Rummy laughed off before the invasion began.
He snubbed them like he did anyone who differed with him. He was as competent as the Cheerleade
We didn't need it; we don't need it now.
The RAND Corporation has some interesting stuff, too; and the Foreign Policy Research Institute (among others) spelled out what was going to happen before we ever went to Iraq.
I remember VERY WELL that, when asked were the so-called 'WMD' were, he said, "Oh, Baghdad, Tikrit, north, south, east, west", waving his hands about and revealing he didn't know where they were, let alone what he was talking about. Dismissal and lies were the trademarkss of that bunch.
We kept being told that "we had a pretty good idea where bin Laden' was, but somehow we just never got him. Either they didn't know where he was, or they couldn't get him where he was; either way, America was lied to for all those years.
Believing in Wolfowitz and his ilk was what led us to stay in Iraq all those years for NOTHING, and it's not yet over. My nephew's already done four tours there, and now he's in Afghanistan. For their crap.

NRA Members Disagree With NRA Leadership: Those On Terrorist Watch List Should Not Be Able To Buy Firearms
msbadger. . .probo. . .the sad fact of the matter is that all life is cannibalistic, whether it's animal, plant, fungoid or other.
there's really no difference: life feeds on life. we make value judgments based on the concepts of 'soul', 'intelligence', 'mind' and other nebulous concepts, but it all boils down to the same thing.
the only difference (and it's my thought, i can always be wrong about this) is that the human is the only delusional animal, who seeks and makes rationalizations and justifications for anything it does, including its consumption of other life.
i know vegetarians who are so zealous in their defense of vegetarianism that they are really no different than religious zealots; it's only the focus that's different. some are virtually violent in their defense and promotion of vegetarianism; and for some, it's destroyed relationships.
to look at the bright side, as if there was one. . .if everything were perfect, we'd kill ourselves out of boredom and apathy.
