Basically, that's how it always was.
Read T H White's 'The Once And Future King', and you learn how the nobility sent the poor off to fight and die while the knights (upper class) partied. However, warfare is somewhat ancillary to the thrust of the tetrology; it's one of many phenomena explored therein.
The fifth installment, 'The Book Of Merlyn', was never added to 'The Once And Furture King', as was intended; editors saw to that. The whole book is an explanation of the why and wherefore of warfare, in terms of what was known at the beginning of WW II.
It would seem that things haven't changed at all, rather than the names and justifications. . .
