Colin Powell: Oil Spill Is 'Beyond The Capacity' Of BP To Solve, Military Might Have Role

Republicans don't trust him, though he is--or has been--one.

During the 1st Bush Administration, Cheney and Rumsfield ganged up against him any time he tried to inject reason into a discussion. This was noted by some people at Defense; one of my monographs from the SSI alludes to it, though the language is nicer.

They more or less made his job as Secretary of State meaningless, since they wanted Iraq and everything that came with it. (Remember 'The Project For The New American Century'.) Powell basically--maybe not totally, but basically--got suckered into buying their line against Iraq and the need to invade. No big surprise that he didn't continue after Bush's reelection, since he would have remained an impotent figurehead, with Cheney and Rumsfield bending Bush's ear, as it were, and calling the shots.

With the worsening of conditions and further injection of partisan ideology into everything, talking heads like Limbaugh, etc., have repeatedly claimed that Powell's not a 'real' Republican. The hardnosers and hardliners in the GOP won't accept him.

Yet, if he'd chosen, he could've run for President and won.
