the Army War College's Strategic Studies Institute put out a monograph a couple years ago concerning the possible breakdown of the Westphalian nation-state, due to (1) overpopulation, (2) lack of resources, (3) the inability of failing or failed state governments to control their territories or population, and (4) the growth of terrorism, insurgency, and organized crime worldwide.



This is not, of course, including the effects of global climate change, which will greatly exacerbate all the foregoing, especially in the production of wars and refugees.

it's called "From the New Middle Ages to a New Dark Age: The Decline of the State and U.S. Strategy", and it was published by the SSI in June of 2008.



as i recall, the author saw a type of neofeudalism of limited area (city-states or other small territories) springing up to replace the concept of the nation-state. makes for fascinating reading.



if correct, the only way out of it i can see is one BIGGGG push into space, either by this country, others, or a consortium of same.
