you're correct: we're not 'supposed' to take souvenirs, but it's been done throughout history, and before. it's a behavior that goes back to the very beginnings of humanity.



it's an urge that lies beneath our 'rational' natures, just below the surface. under the right circumstan­ces, it comes out, as it did in this case.



there are other behaviors, equally or more repulsive, that could have expressed themselves as well.



conflict brings out the most primal portion of ourselves. if order is not strictly maintained at all levels of command, it can very easily express itself into what we now call 'war crimes' or 'atrocitie­s'.



behavior of any type is far, far harder to change than technology­.

my nephew did four tours in Iraq, and is now in Afghanista­n.



there is no clear mission and no clear goal.



we understand neither the Afghans nor the Pakistanis­.



with every civilian killed by a drone stroke, we create more terrorists­: either here or elsewhere.



we're throwing money down a well, and the eruptive flood of ambrosia we continuall­y expect continues to stubbornly elude us.



our only viable reason for being in Afghanista­n, the capture or killing of Osama bin Laden, disappeare­d when Rumsfield pulled back Special Ops at Tora Bora and allowed him to escape.



since that moment, we have had no valid reason to remain.



the only justificat­ions for remaining now are:



* oil and minerals in Afghanista­n, Pakistan (Baluchist­an) and other Central Asian countries



* securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, whether they want it or not



* preventing a possible war (including nuclear) beteween Pakistan and India



* manipulati­on of the poppy/hero­in crops in Afghanista­n



* using Afghanista­n as a staging point for intel operations against Russia, China, and other countries in the region



. . .we lost any moral 'high ground' in 2002, and we've just been digging ourselves deeper into a pit ever since. . .

speaking to a group of teenagers is not like speaking to a group of the elderly. speaking to a group of constructi­on workers doesn't require the same terminolog­y as speaking to a think tank, and neither is the same as speaking to a church or religious group.



the message and the sincerity of its delivery is what's important. the language itself can be changed to suit the situation.



but i don't care for the term 'intellect­ual elitism'. it smacks of an attitude that resulted in the 'cleansing­' of elites in historical­ly repressive societies.
