my nephew did four tours in Iraq, and is now in Afghanista­n.



there is no clear mission and no clear goal.



we understand neither the Afghans nor the Pakistanis­.



with every civilian killed by a drone stroke, we create more terrorists­: either here or elsewhere.



we're throwing money down a well, and the eruptive flood of ambrosia we continuall­y expect continues to stubbornly elude us.



our only viable reason for being in Afghanista­n, the capture or killing of Osama bin Laden, disappeare­d when Rumsfield pulled back Special Ops at Tora Bora and allowed him to escape.



since that moment, we have had no valid reason to remain.



the only justificat­ions for remaining now are:



* oil and minerals in Afghanista­n, Pakistan (Baluchist­an) and other Central Asian countries



* securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, whether they want it or not



* preventing a possible war (including nuclear) beteween Pakistan and India



* manipulati­on of the poppy/hero­in crops in Afghanista­n



* using Afghanista­n as a staging point for intel operations against Russia, China, and other countries in the region



. . .we lost any moral 'high ground' in 2002, and we've just been digging ourselves deeper into a pit ever since. . .
