How America's Evangelical Leaders Wield Power

they don't. people all over the world know the 'truth'. it's really just a rather limited, often authoritarian ontological viewpoint, possibly a mutation of primatological social behaviors to maintain social hierarchal attitudes.

in their heart of hearts, many realize their ignorance. for them, it's a way of maintaining a stable worldview in the face of a reality which overwhelms and frightens them.

for others, it literally is the truth, and none other exists. in the face of certain death, it's the only reality they see or will confirm.

one of the benefits is that religion's a very very very powerful form of social control.

i've seen films of what can only be called 'funerals', yet those services were held by elephants and chimpanzees. strip away the ritual and dogma, and i saw no difference.

the late Joseph Campbell did quite an essay years back in dealing with the relationship of mythology (or religion, no real difference) to schizophrenia. and Jung's done a LOT of great work about religion and mythology.

i was born in the Church of Christ. when i joined the Marines, i checked out other services (including non-Christian) available. when i got to Japan, i found even more to study.

i've continued since. i wish i could get copies of the Mahabharata, the Zend Avesta, and the Jain scriptures.

some 35 years later, i have a 'religion'. however, it's mine, and won't be pushed on anyone. it was born with me, annd it'll die with me.
